1979
It's hard to believe now, but disco
was "IT" in 1979, and the ratings proved it. KKDA-FM
“K104” continued its run, even notching a top 5 finish in the
fall.
Adding to the fever was long-time soul station KNOK-FM, billing itself as
“Disco and More”, which made its top 10 debut in the fall.
The October/November survey yielded a combined ten shares between the two
disco stations, which may help account for the displacement of the top 40
stations from that book’s top 10. Disco wouldn’t last much longer
though, and both K104 and KNOK would soon
begin their transitions to “urban contemporary”.
On the rock side, KTXQ “Q102” was making major waves in the market less than a year into its existence. After knocking KZEW (The Zoo) out of the top 10 in just one book, Q102 soared into top 5 in just its second book, the 6.8 share scored in the spring remains the highest share ever attained by any station on the 102.1 frequency.
1979
also saw a bit of an AM
resurgence: in the spring, WBAP reclaimed the top spot with a jump of over four
shares, and WFAA made its first top 10 appearance since having flipped
from a music to a news/talk format in 1976.
