1975
The top of the ratings continued to be dominated by WBAP in 1975, but the real story was happening just below the top spot. KLIF's number 2 finish in the spring survey would mark the legendary station's last appearance in the top 5. More importantly, the fall survey would mark the first ratings period in history where KLIF was defeated in the top 40 format. The story runs even deeper though, because the station that defeated KLIF was owned by the man who sold KLIF just three years before. When Gordon McLendon sold KLIF in 1972, the buyers declined to buy KLIF's sister station (at that time, KNUS was a progressive rock station.) McLendon then had the opportunity to make all of his old tricks new again, making KNUS into a new breed of top 40 station. His legendary promotional and programming wizardry were now being applied with a more hip, rock-based playlist and anyone who knew McLendon knew that KNUS would be a success. The Fall 1975 ratings proved it - KNUS defeated KLIF, becoming one of the first FM top 40 stations in the nation to defeat its AM competition.
